Ship Bow Wings with Application to Trim and Resistance Control in Calm Water and in Waves

Flapping foils for augmenting thrust production have drawn attention as a means of assisting ship propulsion in waves due to their high efficiency rate compared traditional screw propellers. However, they can also offer substantial resistance reduction when used stabilizers. In this work, the aim is investigate feasibility symbiotic concept combining ship’s propeller with foil arranged at bow fixed position operating trim-pitch stabilizer. The work presents results obtained from experiments conducted towing tank Laboratory Ship and Marine Hydrodynamics National Technical University Athens (LMSH NTUA), well an in-house CFD solver. test cases focused on dynamic behavior wing–vessel configuration calm water conditions head waves. All were against performance bare hull (without foil). findings are based both numerical experimental data indicate that wing static mode be trim-control vessel by altering angle attack leading possible drop wave latter case, utilizing significant pitching heaving responses vessel, which may lead enhancement performance.
